Taize and Brother Roger...

There was some interesting conversation regarding 'Taize' while in Rome and I came across this information regarding Brother Roger's reformed background which I thought might be interesting if people are still processing what they thought.

Roger was born the ninth and youngest child of Karl Ulrich Schütz, a Protestant pastor from Bachs in the Zürcher Unterland (Zürich Lowlands) in Switzerland, and his wife, Amélie Henriette Schütz-Marsauche, a French Protestant woman from Burgundy.
From 1937 to 1940, Roger studied Reformed theology in Strasbourg and Lausanne, where he was a leader in the Swiss Student Christian Movement, part of the World Student Christian Federation.

In 1940, he rode a bicycle from Geneva to Taizé, a small town near Mâcon, about 390 kilometres (240 miles) southeast of Paris. Taizé was then in unoccupied France, just beyond the line of demarcation to the zone occupied by German troops. For two years Brother Roger hid Jewish refugees before being forced to leave Taizé. In 1944, he returned to Taizé to found the Community, initially a small quasi-monastic community of men living together in poverty and obedience.

From a Protestant background, Brother Roger undertook a step that was without precedent since the Reformation: entering progressively into a full communion with the faith of the Catholic Church without a “conversion” that would imply a break with his origins. In 1980, during a European Meeting in Rome, he said in St Peter’s Basilica in the presence of Pope John Paul II: “I have found my own identity as a Christian by reconciling within myself the faith of my origins with the mystery of the Catholic faith, without breaking fellowship with anyone.”

are presently making plans for the ETL Network Conference 2009. Our ETL
Secretary, Major Marsha-Jean Bowles, will be sending you the information

In January, 2008, twenty-eight training leaders attended our conference. It was a wonderful
time of sharing and learning together. We trust you will make plans to share in the January 2009 network conference!

One of the great outcomes of the conference is connection. Each year, we have shared those connections made with other territories on the Network Wall and how we have helped each other.

We would like to move this sharing opportunity to the Blog. This will enable each of us to give or gain assistance when needed.

24/7/5 Prayer...

Australia S are trying to kick start a worldwide college prayer network with the idea of creating a wave of prayer over 5 continents. The Principal Major Stephen Court has asked me to let you know. I suspect that if you are interested it would be a good idea to contact me and you can collaborate with WBC.

Two questions

Dear ETL fellow members, can you please tell me the official name of your training program? Specifically I am looking to find out the various terms used in your name such as school, college, centre (and the logic behind the choice of word).

The second question - that I hope you will not consider indiscrete - is the amount cadets are asked to pay themselves when entering the training program. I need to know if any amount is asked of each cadet and if so, how much.

Fanally I hope I'm in...

I came home, defined to manage to take part on the blog. I've been trying again and again and.... So far I've only manage to read...
Today I had decided to give it one more try before writing Hervé. But suddenly "someone" let me one step further.
It was good to meet you in Holland! Last weekend we had our annual Nordic Training Course in Latvia. 55 persons gathered for good, rewarding teaching and fellowship! It's encouraging to meet with so many people with the same desire again and again!
Well this is my first try in the blog. Time will tell if this works..

A complete of all the Spanish-language publications available through IHQ has been made available through this blog. Check it out on the right of this page. There is a pull-down menu under the heading TRANSLATED RESOURCES. (To use this menu, you need to have java scripts enabled on your browser). You are then asked whether you want to open or save the Excel spreadsheet spanishbooks.xls

Inspection Copies...

I thought I would let people know about a system that we benefit from at WBC.

By registering interest with kevin.ball@stl.org he will send you a couple of book catalogues a year. If you see a book(s) that you think you may be able to use in your teaching you can request to see an inspection copy. That book is sent to you and you then have a choice.

You can keep the book for free if you then add it to your reading list;
You can buy it at half price if you don't want to add it to your reading list;
Or you can return the book covering the cost of carriage.

There may be complications if you are not EU - but I would say it was worth a go.
